PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Treatment in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

PRP treatment in Ras Al Khaimah or platelet rich plasma treatment is relatively new in Ras Al Khaimah but the same concept has been around especially in the wound healing scientific research community for the past 10-20 years in some way shape or form. PRP is based on the principle that normal human blood contains many different particles known as cells, e.g., red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. While red blood cells or RBCs are a major transporter of oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, white blood cells or WBCs are the main defense force to fight against germs in the body. The third type of cells called as platelets are a major source of many growth factors and also help to stop bleeding thus their low level in Dangue fever can cause dangerous bleeding. Platelets' role in the production of many valuable growth factors has been recognized by the medical research community for well over two decades and one example is the production of PDGF or Platelet derived Growth Factor produced by the platelets that helps wounds to heal in many different ways.

    How PRP in Androgenic Alopecia?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a newer method in Ras Al Khaimah for the treatment of various types of alopecia. In this prospective study, safety, efficacy and feasibility of PRP injections in treating androgenic alopecia were assessed. Eleven patients suffering from hair loss due to androgenic alopecia and not responding to 6 months treatment with minoxidil and finasteride were included in this study. The hair pull test was performed before every treatment session. A total volume of 2-3 cc PRP was injected in the scalp by using an insulin syringe. The treatment was repeated every two weeks, for a total of four times. The outcome was assessed after 3 months by clinical examination, macroscopic photos, hair pull test and patient's overall satisfaction.

    PRP Results?

A significant reduction in hair loss was observed between first and fourth injection. Hair count increased from average number of 71 hair follicular units to 93 hair follicular units. Therefore, average mean gain is 22.09 follicular units per cm2. After the fourth session, the pull test was negative in 9 patients.

    Type of Baldness:

There are many people who experience more than average hair loss. Such complete or partial loss of hair is called alopecia. Below are the types of baldness..

    Involutional alopecia :

In this type the hair growth becomes slow as you grow this reduces the volume and thickness. The hair follicles slowly go in the (resting) phase.

    Telogen effluvium :

This will give you a temporary hair loss from days to months after a strained incident like fever, childbirth, stress, severe illness, or unexpected weight loss, which decreases slowly in a few months. Such kind of hair loss is known as telogen effluvium.

    Traction alopecia :

Baldness may also take place due to pressure on hair this may lead to tiny, localised areas of hair loss. This kind of hair loss is known as traction alopecia.

    Circumscribed:

This baldness occurs when the protected system starts to bother hair follicles, leading to hair fall.

    Androgenic alopecia :

This affects to both men and women. It causes loss and thinning of hairs on the entire scalp. Women experience this occurrence as a diffuse alopecia. More than 40% of people get this type of Androgenic alopecia.

    Conclusion:

PRP injection is a simple, cost effective and feasible treatment option for androgenic alopecia, with high overall patient satisfaction.
